Legal Interpreter Training Course

Legal Interpreter Training Course

This 80-hour course will provide participants with the specific skills and knowledge necessary to become interpreters in the courts and legal settings. The course will introduce participants to the roles and responsibilities of court/legal interpreters, including ethics, standards and procedures, and court/legal terminology in English and their target language. Students will also gain an understanding of New Hampshire’s Judicial Branch, the most common court forms, and linguistic intervention protocols for court/legal interpreters.

This is an 80-hour online course that includes live discussions, courtroom observation, and independent home study for individuals with bi-lingual or multi-lingual fluency who would like to become professional legal interpreters. It is recommended that students have previously completed Medical Interpreter Training and the legal course builds on this foundation. While most of the course is delivered asynchronously, students are required to attend 5 live remote sessions.

The curriculum uses an online format for lectures and assignments in conjunction with live remote discussions and 40 hours of courtroom observations giving students the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge base they need to deliver accurate and complete interpretation in a variety of legal settings. Through this training, participants will have the opportunity to review their legal vocabulary with a language-specific coach (as long as there is a coach available for a particular language). This training is taught by our own highly experienced trainers who take pride in delivering a quality educational program.

Students will finish the course with the tools they need to begin successful careers as professional legal interpreters. Students who attend all class sessions and pass the final assessments will receive a certificate of proficiency. This course is set up specifically for students seeking to do legal interpretation in New Hampshire. The information is helpful and valuable for students in any state, but students should check the requirements for their state before enrolling.
